LVT = luxury vinyl tile flooring

This is a newer, more advanced version of standard vinyl. From the aesthetic angle, it is a remarkably realistic mimic of wood, tile, or stone. There's a vast array of colors, patterns, designs, and species from which to choose. Special texturing features give the appearance of wire-brushed, had scraped, weathered or distressed and you can choose from matte or gloss finishes. Some even use grout with the tile pieces for more realism.

From the functional point of view, the luxury version is a thicker, completely waterproof, and more durable flooring than standard vinyl which comes in a thinner tile. It has six to eight layers, including the top sheet, a clear plastic wear layer that protects and measures two to eight mm. The thicker is better. The tiles measure as 12 X 18 squares and the flooring can last as much as 25 years with proper maintenance.

What is the difference between LVT and WPC or SPC?

LVT, or luxury vinyl tile, is the first generation of this advanced version of the original vinyl. It has a vinyl composite core. WPC (wood plastic composite) and SPC (stone plastic composite) are two even more technologically advanced cores that provide an even higher level of water and moisture protection. Also, SPC tends to give a more rigid feel.

Other benefits include:

  • Easy care. Sweep or vacuum daily so dirt won’t embed. While LVT is waterproof stains and spills should be wiped up from the flooring immediately, so nothing sets or gets between the seams.

  • Uncomplicated installation. This is also DIY-friendly, which adds to the affordability. With a few exceptions, the material “floats” over existing subfloors and the pieces click and lock.
